Make Money Online with Affiliate Programs

It doesn’t matter whether you have a large website that receives a lot of traffic or a small site, your business can benefit from affiliate programs. Now I am going to give you some ideas on how to get started but before that you must understand what are affiliate programs and how they works.

What Are Affiliate Programs?

Affiliate program is one where a business pays other websites to market its products and services. It means that one company is paying some incentives to another to promote its products and services.

The ad format of these promotional programs can vary as well, from text link ads or links, to larger “banners” and other graphic ads. One advantage of using text links in an affiliate program is that they can be naturally integrated into the content of your website, and it won’t look like advertisements. Graphical advertisements are generally more descriptive and compelling, and it may lead to more users clicking on it, but the size and nature of the graphic must be carefully selected and it must be balanced against the other elements of your webpage on which it’s posted. The advertiser (or the company that is looking to increase its business from the affiliate program) generally have their own graphics and ad banners from which the affiliate marketer can choose.

By “affiliate programs” we are not talking about Pay Per Click Programs like Google’s AdWords, Yahoo Search Marketing, Microsoft adCenter, or similar programs offered by others. While these programs are excellent tools for helping businesses publicize themselves those programs are not affiliate programs.

How Do Affiliate Programs Work?

In an affiliate program, the advertiser pays the affiliate (or the publisher) a certain amount of money as commission each time a specified action occurs. The types of actions vary depending upon the nature of the program, and it includes:

  • Pay-Per-Sale. The advertiser pays the affiliate when the publisher sends a customer to the advertiser’s website and who then purchases something from the merchant. The amount is generally either a flat fee or a percentage of the amount sold.
  • Pay-Per-Click. In this program, the advertiser pays a certain amount for each visitor who reaches it’s website from the publisher’s website.
  • Pay-Per-Lead. The advertiser pays the affiliate when the publisher sends a visitor and who sign up as leads on the advertiser website. (For example, filling out a debt consolidation form on the advertiser’s website).

As you might have imagined, someone needs to keep track of the activities on the publisher’s website, the total number of clicks generated, site visits and any resulting sales, and must make sure that the publisher receives whatever money is owed to them. Most businesses that want to have an affiliate program outsource that to other affiliate marketing companies.

How Do I Get Started?

If you want to become an affiliate, you should first identify what type of programs make the most sense for your website. Be selective, and don’t sign up for each and every program you find on the web. If you participate in too many programs, your website will be full of ads, and very few of the programs will be effective. You may even drive your visitors away from your site. Keep in mind the type of person you normally draw to your site, and try to give them affiliate links that they’re likely to be interested in.
