Think from the search engines point of view, the chief aim of any search giant is offer the most appropriate information searched by its users. Understand that your search engine ranking is vital and if your web site is not getting ranked in 20 to 30 search results then the users you prefer going to some other source. On the other hand, any search engine would try its best to offer relevant information as the web users would go to different search engine if they do not find what they need.

The majority of searches done globally are conducted on Google, Yahoo and MSN. All search engines have their own way to decide up on rankings. The main formula used to evaluate web sites relevancy with search results or keywords is called algorithms. Most search engines have a precise search engine standard that a web site must complete if it expects to be on crest of the search results ranking. Even though the each search engine’s ranking principles differs from one web site to another, there are two common features that all search engines share – Content and Link Popularity.

These are interrelated, by link popularity, it simply means, how impressive your web site is to any search engine in terms of value of links and excellence of those links. This is done by comparing the content of each others web site. This influence PageRank, most of you may know what PR is, however for those who don’t now, it is a series of algorithms invented by two famous personalities Serge Brin and Larry Page during 1998. It works from 0 – 10 scale, where 0 is the lowest and 10 remains highest. The higher your web site PR is the more trustworthy your site would be.

Google’s description of PageRank:

“PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes or links a page receives; it also analyzes the pages that cast the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves ‘important’ weigh more heavily and help to make other pages ‘important’.”

Lets come back to the link popularity, every web site that gets linked to your web site will give their PR and you will give your PR to their web site. Mainly web site will have good PR only on their home page as that is the page with great incoming links would love pointing to. But on the other hand, the inner pages would have no or less PR than the homepage. So it also becomes very significant to have deep links, which are links linked to other pages than the homepage.

Most of you may think that it is necessary to have top PR to get top listings in search engines. That may be true, but understand each search engine has varied way to list your web site on page first. Alternatively, it is also possible to get first listing with page rank zero.
